A quick look at deadnet shows me that they no longer list the date of each track on Road Trips Vol. 1 # 2, but when they first offered it, they did. While the song list on disc 2 may look something like a set that might have been played, it's actually compiled from performances on at least three different nights. If anyone has the actual CD's they could back me up on this. My interest in complete shows has nothing to do with completism, I just prefer to listen to the music the way it was played, or as close to the way it was played as possible. I don't see the point in putting together sets that never happened.

Two nights: Playing from 10-14, then Drums through Around and Around from 10-16, then Brokedown Palace and the Playing reprise from 10-14 again.

But in fairness to GDP, the real second set jam from 10-16 wouldn't have fit on one CD anyway, and the first three numbers (Scarlet>Fire>Estimated) are on the bonus CD. All that is missing is about 3 minutes of Drums.

Like strat, I'd have to say I don't care a shaved ferret's belly about completism.

Or to put it another way: I'm thinking the archivists ran through what they viewed as the most memorable complete or near-complete shows in the 36 installments of Dick's Picks. The nice thing about the Road Trips series is that it enables them to release some material they probably never would or could have if they stuck to complete shows.

Or to put it yet another way: I'm thinking the alternative to Road Trips would have been nothing, and I'll cheerfully take Road Trips over nothing.

No argument here - I hear exactly what you are saying, and sorry if I was re-hashing old news. What may have been lost in my second post is that my first post pointed out that Vol. 3 seemed to be correcting the trend by making it two discs of material, one from each of two nights. I bought Vol. 1 for exactly the reasons you say, even though I had all of those shows, and skipped Vol. 2 as much because I already have so much high-quality 77 in complete shows. But, all that said, Vol. 3 is looking better and better and they will probably end up getting my cash for that Yale Bowl Dark Star>Bird Song ..
